As I wrote last week, this past Saturday I attended the inaugural St. Louis Rams Ladies Football Camp.  While I knew a bit about what the day would entail, my expectations were completely surpassed.  It was awesome… to say the least.  Here are the highlights:

When we first arrived, we were given a tour of Rams Park – where the Rams practice.  We were allowed to go in the locker room and the weight room.  Well, it all looked like a big playroom to me, so I played!

I mean, when else would I have the chance to play in the Rams’ weight room?  Do you think Rams players do things like this?  Who knows!  I had fun.  😉

Rams Ladies Football Camp 1

Following our playtime tour, there was fruit, granola bars, water, and Gatorade, and then introductions were made.  We heard from Dr. Brophy, one of the Rams Washington University physicians. He talked about a conference that the team physicians attend each year. It provides an opportunity for doctors to meet each other which comes in handy when teams are traveling should the players need medical attention.

Then we went onto the outdoor practice field at Rams Park to begin our warm up and stretching routine.  We did jumping jacks, lunges, squats, push-ups, a variety of stretches, and planks.

After we were nice and warm, we moved camp indoors, broke into groups, and began sessions led by Title Boxing Club and Elite Football Academy.  Rams players were helping at each station which made it all more fun!  The sessions included learning how to properly throw a football and aiming at a target (I made it twice!), two different boxing stations, practicing a football stance and keeping our hips square with each movement, an agility drill where we jumped over bags, ran a few feet, and caught a football, working our core with lots of ab work, and practicing correct technique for catching a football.

I would show you more action shots of the day, but really it was too fun to stop to snap a pic.  Between stations I did make time to pose with Rams players.  Obviously!

They also provided us with a Subway boxed lunch, a cute Rams shirt, and a Rams hat!  We’re all set for the upcoming season!

All in all, it truly was a marvelous event.  Big thank you to everyone in the St. Louis Rams organization for putting on the first Ladies Football Camp!  It was awesome to see so many women getting active and to learn more about what being a Rams player entails.

St. Louis Rams Ladies Football Camp GIVEAWAY (closed)

Hey there!  Itz no secret that I love staying active in a variety of ways.  Whether itz lifting weights in the gym, climbing stairs at a park, practicing yoga in a studio, or kayaking through a lake, I just love to MOVE!  I also love and cherish the city I was born and raised in: St. Louis.  I especially love learning about active events in St. Louis since getting active in the community in which you live should be on everyone’s priority list.

When I first heard that there was a Ladies Football Camp hosted by the St. Louis Rams, I was instantly intrigued.  I wanted to get involved and learn more to tell all my local St. Louis ladies, and so I did just that. 🙂

Ladies Football Camp

The inaugural Ladies Football Camp will take place this Saturday, July 20th, 2013 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Itz located at Rams Park – the exact location where our local NFL team practices!  All participants will get to tour the locker room, receive a t-shirt and hat, and learn some of the behind the scenes of what it takes to be a professional football player.

TITLE Boxing Club will be running three stations: kickboxing, core work, and stretching involving yoga.  Light snacks and a boxed lunch will be provided.  There will be the opportunity to meet Rams alumni players and staff.  Washington University Physicians and Barnes Jewish Hospital are the official sponsors.

Itz going to be a marvelous workout and a marvelous football & fitness event!

Fun fact: The St. Louis Rams are the first NFL team to develop a training academy (Elite Football Academy) for kids looking to get more serious about football.  They have programs for youth, middle school, high school, and college/pro.  Many professional football players from St. Louis have come out of the Elite Football Academy!

Upper Limits Indoor Rock Climbing Gym

Last weekend I did something new that was SO.MUCH.FUN!  My newly married friends, Diana and Andy, and I all bought Groupons to check out Upper Limits Indoor Rock Climbing Gym.  We all were born and raised in St. Louis yet none of us had visited this place.  We didn’t know what we were missing until we were there!

At Upper Limits you have a couple of options.  One, you could take a two-hour class and learn how to tie knots and safely belay someone.  Or, you can use the auto-belays and just play all day.  That’s what we did.  They did give us a brief orientation, so we learned how the auto-belays worked, as well as some important safety tips.  A cool thing about Upper Limits is that you buy an all-day pass, so if you want to climb for awhile, then go eat lunch, you can come back and climb more later.  I’m not going to lie though: we were pretty wiped after climbing for over an hour.

The staff at Upper Limits is AWESOME! We all commented about how they are super friendly, totally knowledgeable about rock climbing, keep safety as a priority, and always willing to answer any questions.  Upper Limits is available for birthday parties which would be really fun for kids and adults alike.  Itz also huge.  Check it out:

Honestly, I thought rock climbing was going to be easy.  Actually, I told Diana and Andy that we could have races and see who could get to the top first (yes, I’m competitive – we already established this).  I was SO completely wrong.  The first time I climbed, I felt a little uneasy.  I knew the auto-belay would catch me, but I didn’t know how it would feel, so I only went halfway up (by choice!) before coming down.  Once I was able to trust the auto-belay, I felt more confident.

We all agreed we were shocked at how much upper body strength it requires.  As we took breaks between climbs, we observed other climbers.  Some were using the auto-belays and others had friends or staff belaying them.  Something we noticed is that when people were not using the auto-belays (when someone else was attached to them), they were able to take a break halfway up.  Maybe they were tired, maybe their hands hurt; we’re not sure which, but they could stop and hang out halfway until they were ready to go again.

That was not possible with the auto-belay.  Frankly, you had to hold on for dear life otherwise the auto-belay would gently lower you to the ground.  I think itz for this reason I had trouble getting to the top.  I was actually pretty frustrated by the fact that I couldn’t make it to the top.  It seriously was SO hard and required so much upper body strength (not my strong suit).  It does make me want to work on my upper body strength, go back, and conquer those darn walls!

Part of Upper Limits included boulders.  These boulders were significantly shorter than the regular climbing walls, but to climb up them you weren’t attached to anything.  Some were on an incline, others were straight up and down.  There were pads underneath for when you fell.  I was able to make it to the top of the boulder.  Woot woot!

When I got to the top I was like uhhh how am I going to get down?  My arms and hands were tired of holding on.  I tried to slowly climb back down, but eventually ended up falling to the mat without getting hurt.

There was one last part of Upper Limits that we had to check out.  They had a “gym” that members were welcome to use.  It had a few different machines, similar to a traditional gym.  But what was special about this gym was that there was a treadwall.  It was like a treadmill and rock climbing wall combined!

There is a lever on the side with numbers one through nine.  The higher the number, the faster the treadwall went.  I was able to keep up at speed seven.  This might have been my favorite part of the day.  Not to mention, it was just hilarious trying to keep up, telling each other to crank up the speed, and eventually falling the couple feet to the mat.

Tandem Yoga

This weekend was filled with yoga – tandem yoga to be specific.  Tandem yoga is when two (or more) people work together to accomplish a pose.  It all started because Athleta is hosting a Seize the Solstice Yoga Challenge on Instagram.  If you follow me on Instagram (@itzlinz), then you’ll have seen my poses for each day in June so far.  Athleta posts a new posture each day, anyone can participate, you replicate the pose, and use the hashtag #seizethesolstice.

On Friday, the pose was upward facing dog and they showed it tandem style.  Now, you didn’t have to do it tandem, but you know me and competition, and I did have to do it tandem.  The only problem: who would be my tandem partner?  I called up my sister Stephanie and told her I needed to borrow Jacob for a little while.  We played yogis, she played photographer.  Upward Facing Dog Tandem:

Incredible, eh?  After Jacob and I mastered this pose, he immediately asked if we could do it with Jackson (my other nephew, his cousin).  When I told him we could try it next time we see Jackson, Jacob then wanted to try it with me on top.  I explained why that wouldn’t quite work… 😉  Jacob had a lot of other ideas to try, mostly with me balancing on him in some way.  Stephanie and I stifled our laughter as he was such a serious little yogi!  We did successfully capture some other poses:

Jacob’s such a good sport and so, so strong!  Parents, I urge you to practice yoga with your kiddos.  In the summer school class I’m teaching now, we practice yoga daily as itz a healthy living class and the kids love it.  Plus, there are many benefits to kids doing yoga, including helping them succeed in school.

Speaking of family tandem yoga, we went to my parents’ house for dinner last night and had a great deal of fun with family tandem yoga.  I mean isn’t this what all families do during Sunday family night dinners?

That’s my older brother Jason on the bottom holding all of us up, my mom is next, then me, and Jacob on top.  I definitely failed at holding a straight plank like my mom, Jason, and Jacob, so let’s just call mine upward facing dog again.  We seriously tried a million combinations with everyone including my sister, Jackson, and even the dog Ellie!

HERSHEY’S Family Play Day in St. Louis

When I first learned about HERSHEY’S Family Play Day in St. Louis, I knew it was something I wanted to be part of.  Since I don’t have kids of my own yet, I called my brother and sister and they brought their kids as we headed out to the event last night.

Who knew that this famous company stood for so much more than chocolate bars?  I didn’t.  Parenting expert Danielle Smith, author of Mom, Incorporated, founder of Extraordinary Mommy, and host of Bliss TV, teamed up with Hershey’s to share tips on how local St. Louis families can get active.  I’d met Danielle once before at a STL Bloggers meet-up, and she’s just as sweet as she is knowledgeable and talented!

Danielle recently wrote a post titled The Power of Play: A Priority for ALL Ages and it highlights an innocent conversation between her and her daughter.  Itz a must-read and a fabulous reminder to parents to get involved with the activities that your kids are interested in!  Don’t just sign them up to be on soccer and baseball teams; get out there in the backyard and play with them!

As an elementary school teacher, I see firsthand the effects playing has on kids.  And when I join in on the fun?  Oh my gosh, itz like they’d just won a million bucks!  Seriously, the days I wore tennis shoes and gym clothes to school and played kickball or ran races with my students were some of the most memorable days of the year.

During the Hershey’s event, Danielle talked a lot about how she plays with her kids.  Her husband is always the neighborhood dad who teaches the kids how to play games.  Playing with kids is not only fun for all, it creates MEMORIES which last a lifetime.  Not to mention, exercise/activity is important for all ages, and itz easier to be a good role model by actually doing what you’re telling the kiddos to do!

There were several fun activities at HERSHEY’S Family Play Day in St. Louis: hula hoops, bubbles, bean bag toss, water balloons, face painting, catch, and three-legged races.  Oh my goodness, have you ever seen a four and a five year old do a three-legged race?  HILARIOUS!  Hershey’s passed out chocolate milk to refuel with as well as packets of Hershey’s syrup to take home and save for later.

While Hershey’s put on a fabulous event, I must say how fun it was to be with my own brother and sister and their kiddos.  Itz awesome that I get to watch them be active with their kids and of course I love being active with my nephews and niece, too.

Get Outdoors Under the Gateway Arch

June 8th is National Get Outdoors Day.  Who knew?  I didn’t.  But I do know there will be tons of events nationwide to celebrate, and I’m all for it!  Encourage people to step away from the tv, computer, and video games and get outside for fresh air and exercise?  Oh yes!  There will be a great event for all my local friends right here in St. Louis!  Get Outdoors Under the Gateway Arch!

WHAT: On Saturday, June 8, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial will celebrate National Get Outdoors Day on the Gateway Arch grounds. The annual one-day event, celebrated by parks and cities across the nation, aims to combat the effects of indoor, inactive lifestyles by encouraging families to spend time outdoors and explore the natural world, while enjoying various outdoor recreational activities.

The Gateway Arch grounds will be filled with various free, family friendly, fun and educational outdoor activities that include a kids’ walk, rock climbing, fitness sessions, live music, geocaching, orienteering, gardening information, stream life demonstrations, and much more! Participants will also have a free photo opportunity to remember their day.

More than 30 local organizations – including Bi-State Development Agency, CityArchRiver, Great Rivers Greenway, the Saint Louis Zoo and the National Park Service – will share information about healthy lifestyles and public lands at the event. “We encourage area residents and families to come out and experience the exciting outdoor activities St. Louis has to offer at this year’s Get Outdoors under the Arch event,” said Ann Honious, Chief, Museum Services and Interpretation, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. “The event promises to include a little something for everyone as it connects area residents to nature and encourages healthy lifestyles.”  Read more about the event HERE.

Healthy Weekend

Itz been a healthy weekend over here, my friends; how about for you?  I think that the term “healthy” refers to so much more than merely exercising and eating right.  While those factors are definitely incredibly important to living a healthy life, being “healthy” also involves taking care of yourself, both mentally and physically, and fostering relationships with those you choose to surround yourself with.

All of such which are, of course, marvelous, which is why we’re starting the week off celebrating Healthy Diva’s Marvelous in my Monday! #MIMM

Healthy is… spending time with your family.  On Friday night, we went out to dinner at The Pasta House to celebrate my nephew Jackson’s fifth birthday!

Of course Jacob had to help hold the cake and blow out his candles.  Those two boys do everything together!  Best of cousins, best of friends.

Healthy is… nourishing your body with healthy food and fueling it when itz hungry.

Healthy is… hanging out with your friends and sitting around a newly built backyard fire pit enjoying each other’s company.

On Saturday night, our good friends Stevie and Whitney invited us over for dinner.  They grilled flank steak, asparagus, and potatoes.  Very delicious!

Healthy is… moving your body.  Exercise IS important!  Don’t forget to enjoy the beauty nature offers when the weather permits, too.

Diana and I headed out Sunday morning for a five-mile walk around her neighborhood.  While it was a simple walk, we got in our workout for the day, kept a brisk pace, and took in the views along the way.

Healthy is… doing things you love with people you love.  Jonny, his parents, and I went to the Cardinals game on Sunday afternoon.

My Running Skirts red and white headband and my Oakley sunglasses match perfectly with the rest of our Cardinal red!  While we didn’t exactly bring home a winner, we certainly loved the hot weather and sunshine on our faces!

Healthy is… rooting for the best baseball team ever – the St. Louis Cardinals!

St. Louis IS Cardinal Nation!  The atmosphere is always a blast at Busch Stadium as St. Louis fans are constantly pumped up and cheering on our team.  I love how you can see the Arch in Busch Stadium; it makes for a very pretty backdrop.  Now how many cities can say that about their stadium?  That’s what I thought.  Go Birds!

St. Louis Spinning

Can I get a TGIF?!  Yowzas this week was long.  Yesterday began with a meeting before school and ended with a spinning class taken with my co-workers after school at St. Louis Spinning.  It had been forever since I’d been to a spin class, but I was looking forward to the change of pace from my weekly workouts.  Plus, I love my co-workers and love to sweat, so itz a good combination all around!

St. Louis Spinning has been open since 1995, has over 20 certified instructors, and offers 13 different classes between spinning, yoga, hula hooping, pilates, and more.  The spinning portion of the studio is located in a garage type area, so when the weather is nice they open the doors for an open-air setting.  That sounds awesome!  We definitely didn’t have the doors open yesterday, but it was still a great ride.

Our instructor Mary Ann, and her friend Hilary sell Isagenix on the side.  Isagenix claims to be the world leader in whole-body nutritional cleansing, cellular replenishing, and youthful aging.  Mary Ann and Hilary encouraged us to try the Want More Energy? drink mix by adding a couple scoops to our water bottles.  It contains Vitamins A, B, and C complex, electrolytes and other nutrients that tend to be lost during exercise.  They compared it to Gatorade without all the sugar and artificial flavors.

I must say, it was quite tasty!  Plus, I love that it contains only natural ingredients and sustains energy naturally without caffeine or other stimulants.  The class itself was so much fun!  There were mostly beginners, so Mary Ann tailored the class to our needs.  The killer was definitely intervals, but I liked the short bursts of high intensity for twenty seconds and then recovery for ten seconds.  It left us all nice and sweaty!

Post-class, Hilary kindly offered us a taste of the IsaLean protein shake.  The whey protein that is used comes from cows in New Zealand that are pasture-fed and not treated with hormones, steroids, or antibiotics.  Just how I like my cows – drug free. Heh heh.  I chose vanilla and liked the way it tasted.  It was smooth, filling, and not overly sweet.  They even gave me a sample to take home.  You know I love my protein!

Overall, we had a blast with Mary Ann during spinning.  I recommend the studio and working out with your co-workers.  Sweating together = bonding!

Feel the Burn Total Body Workout

How do you feel when plans change?  I don’t mind it at all as I’m super laid back and usually make plans at the last minute anyway.  Jonny, on the other hand, loves to make plans far in advance, and gets upset if we deviate from them or if they change.  I suppose that one of the reasons we work out so well?  #oppositesattract  Anyway, last night I had plans to meet Clare and Becca for dinner, but the place we intended on going to closed earlier than we expected.

We decided to go to Nadoz Cafe.  I was stoked because I’d been wanting to eat there after trying their juice.  Well, they closed earlier than we thought, too!  Nadoz also has a wine bar that is right next door, so we went there instead.

Plans changed from having juice with dinner to vino, but it was fantastic anyway since my company was the most important part.  I ordered the sea scallops and they were just as delicious as they were beautiful (as you can tell from my empty plate!).

Yesterday after school I led a 45-minute workout session with a few teachers who stayed after.  Itz part of our Wellness Wednesdays, so every other week I teach a bootcamp-style class while another teacher does Zumba classes on opposite weeks.  I love my co-workers anyway, and this is just one more reason why!

This was the second class that I led, and I have to get creative since we workout in the library.  No equipment.  I titled the workout Feel the Burn because that’s exactly what our muscles did.  Plus, it worked our total body.

Resources for the exercises that aren’t quite as common: Skaters, Plank Walk-Ups, Frog Jumps, Diamond Push-Ups, Plie Squats, and Supermans.

We warmed up for 5 minutes by running up and down the school stairs (three flights).  Then, we completed the circuit once through, and then a second time with 30 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest.  My muscles were burning!

Since my classroom has exercise balls for chairs, I’d like to design our next workout using the balls.  What are your favorite moves on stability balls?

Healthy Living Excitement in St. Louis

Itz the weekend – my favorite part of the week!  I’ve got some fun weekend plans ahead, so I thought I’d share them with you because I’m pretty excited about them.  Nothing too major, but many of them involve healthy living in St. Louis.

Lift weights at the gym.  I’ve put together what I think is a fun new strength training workout.  If itz good, I’ll be sure to share with you next week.

St. Louis Bloggers meet up!  Ces and Judy’s Catering has been kind enough to host a group of us St. Louis bloggers for dinner.  I’m excited to see old blends, meet new blends, and hang out with fun people (and of course eat good food!).  Last night, Clare from Fitting It All In and I went to a social media event.

Along with several new tips at the social media event, I learned of a new-to-me blog: The Cubicle Chick.  Written by Danyelle, she has made blogging her full-time job and shared a lot of worthwhile information.

Breakfast with Caitlin.  My best friend Caitlin is in town for the weekend and I’m excited to spend some time with her (and again: eat some good food!).  She’s my most fabulous friend and we always have the best time together whether itz drinking coffee, running, or dancing the night away.

Bikram yoga.  I will take a bikram class (or two!) this weekend.  Last weekend it got put on hold due to my new hair, but I’m definitely getting to a class.  I still have nine classes left at Bikram Yoga Chesterfield thanks to my Groupon and my first class there was awesome, so I’m looking forward to another sweat session.

Farmer’s Market trip.  Itz been over a month since my last trip to the farmer’s market, so that must change this weekend!  The farmer’s market is my favorite spot to buy fresh produce.  They’ve got great deals and such variety.

Spending time with my boo.  Yes, this counts as healthy living!  Healthy living includes healthy relationships and surrounding yourself with people who make you feel good, and that’s just what Jonny does! xoxo

Waking up with no alarm.  During the work week I wake up at 5:00 in the morning.  Itz no problem for me, but sleeping in always feels so darn good.  And sleep is a major factor in living a healthy life!

Batch cooking.  I do find enjoyment in setting time aside on Sunday to prepare healthy meals and foods for the week.  I clean and cut produce, cook beans, sometimes chicken, and set myself up for the week ahead.
