Happiness

Life isn’t always happy.  In fact, sometimes life is downright hard.  It can be busy, sad, stressful, but it can also be full of joy and happiness.  Happiness is an outlook and I truly believe that happiness is what you make of it.

happiness is what you make of it

So today I’m sharing a few things lately that have been making me happy.  Simple things.  But itz happiness nonetheless.

Happiness is… seeing adorable and enormous baby animals at the zoo.  My class took a field trip to the St. Louis Zoo on Tuesday.  We had gorgeous weather and it seemed like all the animals were out.  Couldn’t resist snapping a photo of this baby elephant.

Happiness is… old friends.  Annette from Enjoy Your Healthy Life and I have been friends since we were two years old.  Inseparable during our elementary years, really, and itz just seven days before we are reunited at the Blend Retreat!  Annette just announced she is having a girl, so let the pink bows, dresses, and dance shoes begin.  Speaking of dance, Annette is an expert dancer; she’s danced her entire life and even convinced me to do a session with her (if that’s even what they’re called).  Please enjoy this beautiful picture of Annette and me from a dance recital probably fifteen years ago.

Happiness is… receiving an awesome package from Victoria’s Secret!  I ordered four of their Perfect Burnout shirts – two V-Neck Tees and two Tank Tops.  Love the burnout look.  Itz a little sheer which will be sexy for summer!

Happiness is… Zoey!  Come on, did you really think I could do a whole happiness post and not include a picture of my little pooch?  Get real!  The sun is shining and summer is nearing which means Zoey’s summer apparel is surfacing once again.  I love this little red jumper dress.  Rainbows just scream summer!

Happiness is… cake batter protein milkshakes.  My cake batter protein is as good as it sounds.  (I order it from iHerb.com – itz Muscle Milk brand – use code VAJ523 to receive a discount on your first order!)  The sprinkles addition is a MUST!

Anyway, I want to tell you about a couple awesome things today.  Big news for St. Louis residents: Athleta is coming to St. Louis!  Athleta will be opening itz first Missouri store in Plaza Frontenac.  I’m going to the launch party and YOU are invited, too.  Check out the flyer for details and be sure to reserve your spot.

Athleta STL

Athleta is a premium fitness and lifestyle brand designed by women athletes for women athletes that features the ultimate performance apparel and gear for active women.  The brand’s high-quality, stylish and functional apparel and accessories reflect the perfect balance of performance, innovative details and design.

I don’t personally own any of their clothes [yet], but have heard others rave about it.  I’m stoked to check them out soon and possibly add an item or two to my ever-growing workout gear collection.  Plus, Athleta is a Girls on the Run sponsor which makes them that much cooler.

Insert random picture of me with two cute puggles to break up this text-heavy post.

me puggles

Actually the puggles aren’t that random as this was shot last summer when my friend Bianca and I went out for coffee.  Meet Bianca: she’s the founder of MizzFIT and is a fitness trend expert.  Let me tell you: she has got it going on in every sense of the word!  Her passion is to motivate woman to feel healthier and look better.  Bianca lives and breathes her mission through her website MizzFit, makes tv appearances, works with celebrities, has the best style both in the gym and out, and on top of it all she’s gorgeous, intelligent, and just as sweet as can be!

Bianca recently filmed a short video for how to save your blowout when you workout.  There are segments specifically geared towards women with long hair, short hair, wavy hair, and/or frizzy hair.  The video shows you what to do with your hair before the gym, and then what to do afterwards to save your blowout.  I got a ton of tips from the video and have watched it several times to try and master the styles!

New Shoes

The other day Mama Pea posted a recipe titled, “Healthy Monkey Bread.”  I’m not kidding you when I say I thought about it all day long, and drove to Trader Joe’s after school to pick up a package of their whole wheat dough, so I could make a batch.

Best.decision.ever.  The recipe was ridiculously easy to make.  Surprisingly, Jonny had never even heard of monkey bread before!  (What??)  I was happy to introduce him.  Sure, there is still some butter and sugar in this recipe, but this is totally worth the indulgence.  And indulgence is a good thing – in moderation; deprivation is not a good thing – ever.  Rest assured, there was NO deprivation going on here last night…

Itz better than using your tongue, right?  I actually asked Jonny while we were eating one a few of the dough balls, “Couldn’t you just finish the whole pan tonight?”  To which he replied, “Obviously.”  And obviously, we did not finish the whole pan because that would not have been moderation.  Moderation is key.

I had a nice little jog yesterday morning.

I had a hard time getting myself out the door, but convinced myself by saying I only “had” to run three.  My goal was to cover five miles, and once I got going it was no problem.  High-five for Linz!

Thanks, Meg, for letting me brag on myself during today’s High Five Friday.  I’m still pretty pumped about the 10K race I ran on Labor Day.  #runnershigh

I’ve been in need of new running shoes.  My last pair I bought were the Mizuno Wave Rider 14′s.  It was probably over a year ago.  Since I hadn’t been running consistently, I went out and bought a pair of Asics (pictured above) to workout in.

Honestly, I bought the Asics because I needed a new pair of workout shoes.  I found them, they were comfortable, I liked the colors, and they were a good price.  However, once I decided to start running a little more seriously, I knew I was in need of a new pair of good running shoes.  I went to the place I always go for new running shoes: Missouri Running Company.  I got a kick out of this little guy in the store:

Mo Run Co. has the best service ever.  The man who helped me looked at my old shoes, watched me walk and run, and listened to what I was looking for and my thoughts on my old shoes.  I loved my Mizuno Wave Rider’s, but I did tell him about my recent knee pain, and knew it could be due to the fact that my shoes were old.  I also have really high arches, so I need pretty supportive shoes.  He suggested the following three pairs: the new Mizuno Wave Rider 15, a pair of Brooks PureFlow, and a pair of Saucony’s (can’t remember which one).

I tested out each pair by running up and down the sidewalk outside the store.  Each pair was extremely light, comfortable, and supportive, but ultimately I decided on the Brooks.

I could feel the most arch support in the Brooks, which I like.  The website states, “With a wider Nav Band coming up the lateral side and grabbing the midsole, the foot receives arch support without the bulkiness of underfoot materials. A center strike pod provides guidance in finding the natural landing zone, and modern air mesh wraps the foot for an incredibly comfortable fit.” (source)  Can’t wait to try them out!

What’s your favorite shoe?

Weekend Things

  1. Friday night was spent hanging out with my almost-four-year-old nephew Jackson.
  2. My family teases me because I despise throw-up and spit-up and seriously can’t handle being around it.  Well, I was holding my niece Audrey and she started coughing.  My sister told me (jokingly) that she was going to spit-up.  I got nervous and passed her to my dad which warranted even more ridicule from my sister.  Eventually my sister took her back and Audrey projectile spit up all over her multiple times.  Take that, sis.
  3. Jonny bought and planted flowers in our backyard like he does every year and I kind of think it’s adorable.  Spring is officially here.
  4. I got to watch my best friend try on her wedding dress.  I’d post a picture, but I think she’d probably kill me since her wedding is not until June. :)
  5. One of my sorority sisters came in town who I haven’t seen in over a year.
  6. We shopped for six hours.
  7. I bought a new green workout top for $10.
  8. And a sexy coral-colored dress which I need to find something to wear it to.
  9. My sorority sister and another friend (who is due to compete in her third figure competition in two weeks!) went out to dinner on the Hill
  10. Itz supposed to be 90 degrees today.

What did YOU do this weekend?
