Happiness

Life isn’t always happy.  In fact, sometimes life is downright hard.  It can be busy, sad, stressful, but it can also be full of joy and happiness.  Happiness is an outlook and I truly believe that happiness is what you make of it.

happiness is what you make of it

So today I’m sharing a few things lately that have been making me happy.  Simple things.  But itz happiness nonetheless.

Happiness is… seeing adorable and enormous baby animals at the zoo.  My class took a field trip to the St. Louis Zoo on Tuesday.  We had gorgeous weather and it seemed like all the animals were out.  Couldn’t resist snapping a photo of this baby elephant.

Happiness is… old friends.  Annette from Enjoy Your Healthy Life and I have been friends since we were two years old.  Inseparable during our elementary years, really, and itz just seven days before we are reunited at the Blend Retreat!  Annette just announced she is having a girl, so let the pink bows, dresses, and dance shoes begin.  Speaking of dance, Annette is an expert dancer; she’s danced her entire life and even convinced me to do a session with her (if that’s even what they’re called).  Please enjoy this beautiful picture of Annette and me from a dance recital probably fifteen years ago.

Happiness is… receiving an awesome package from Victoria’s Secret!  I ordered four of their Perfect Burnout shirts – two V-Neck Tees and two Tank Tops.  Love the burnout look.  Itz a little sheer which will be sexy for summer!

Happiness is… Zoey!  Come on, did you really think I could do a whole happiness post and not include a picture of my little pooch?  Get real!  The sun is shining and summer is nearing which means Zoey’s summer apparel is surfacing once again.  I love this little red jumper dress.  Rainbows just scream summer!

Zoey

Happiness is… cake batter protein milkshakes.  My cake batter protein is as good as it sounds.  (I order it from iHerb.com – itz Muscle Milk brand – use code VAJ523 to receive a discount on your first order!)  The sprinkles addition is a MUST!

Bachelorette in Nashville

My best friend Diana is getting married in June, so this last weekend a group of ten girls headed to Nashville for her bachelorette party.  To say it was “fun” is a total understatement.  While it was way too short of a trip, we made the most of it while we were there.  Itz definitely a weekend never to forget!

bachelorette

We didn’t end up leaving St. Louis until 6:00 pm on Friday evening.  The drive was supposed to take approximately four and a half hours.  It took closer to seven…  There were torrential downpours literally the entire way there.  One of the other bridesmaids, Amy, gave Diana a “Bachelorette On Board” flag for the car, so we hung it out the window for the first hour or so.  When we pulled it in, we laughed at how quickly it became tattered from the terrible weather.  It was like the flag partied too hard before the weekend even began!

bachelorette on board

Fast forward seven rainy hours later: We finally arrive in Nashville!  At this point itz close to midnight and we’re exhausted.  We run into Aloft Hotel where we had reservations for the past two months and were told they overbooked and had no rooms available!  Uhhh what?!  We absolutely could not believe it.  They explained that they would put us up in a room elsewhere, on them, and then tomorrow night they would have a room ready.  The “other” hotel ended up being a less than stellar (and pretty dingy, dirty, and all around gross) Holiday Inn Express.  Not cool, Aloft Hotels, not cool.

We managed to get a few hours of a shut-eye after grabbing a bite to eat of greasy (yet delicious) grub at Tavern, got ourselves together, and headed out to explore Nashville!  One of the first stops was at The Bluebird Cafe which, apparently, is a big deal for those who love and follow the show Nashville (I had never heard of it…).

bluebird cafe

It was closed, so a picture under the awning had to suffice.  :)   After The Bluebird, we did a little shopping downtown.  My favorite store was called Festivity.  It was trendy, super cute, a little hippie, and reasonably priced.  I ended up purchasing a headband and a tank top perfect for the summer.  While it continued to rain throughout the day, it definitely didn’t detour us from any stores.  We took another group shot outside a boot shop for a classic Nashville picture.

Nashville girls

I’m wearing my new headband from Festivity!

Around two o’clock we started becoming concerned that we had not yet heard from Aloft Hotel.  They had told us they’d call us first thing in the morning as soon as someone checked out and they got a room cleaned, so we could come check-in early.  Regular check-in was at three, so a little after two we headed to the hotel to see what was up.  Unfortunately, the two new desk people had no idea what we were talking about when we explained the situation.  It was beyond frustrating, especially when we had received room confirmation just a couple days before.

Long story short, we ended up getting a room comped.  It was a nice gesture as the rooms are $250 per night, but the hassle we dealt with was not worth it at all.  I would not recommend this hotel because of the inconvenience, lack of communication, and no guarantee that your reservation actually holds a room.  Itz very unfortunate because the rooms were awesome and enormous.

aloft hotel

My picture doesn’t do the room justice.  On the opposite side of the tv, there was a pull out couch.  There were two huge bean bags for lounging on, as well (you can kind of see one of them leaning against the wall).  Plus, I loved the artwork as there were several pieces hanging in our room, bathroom, and many more throughout the hotel.

Aloft hotel art

After a day full of fun (and rain), it was time to shower, get dolled up, give fun presents to Diana, and spend a night on the town! Since Diana is seriously my best friend ever, I let her borrow my bachelorette dress I wore to my own bachelorette party.  I wouldn’t have wanted (or let) anyone else wear it, and it was fun to see her in my special dress.

Diana Bachelorette

Reversed roles!  Amy gave Diana a custom sash that was covered in bling and read, “Future Mrs. _____.”  (Obviously, it said her actual future last name, but for privacy purposes I’m keeping it blank.)  In case anyone is interested, Amy ordered the sash from The House of Bachelorette – it makes the perfect present and is gorgeous too!

After gifts and drinks in our hotel room, we headed to the lobby to wait for a cab and take a group shot before leaving.  Gotta love the sorority kneeling pose!

Nashville bachelorette

We went to dinner before hitting up Rippy’s.  Rippy’s is a large bar with several rooms; there were two bands playing great music – mostly country, but not all.  Tons of dancing was done as we were moving and grooving and a great time was most definitely had!

Diana bachelorette 1

All in all, it was a totally awesome weekend.  Diana, I love you and cannot wait for your wedding day!  I’m glad I got to experience Nashville for your bachelorette party!

Where was your (or a friend’s) bachelorette party?  Mine was in St. Louis in July 2010 and a total blast!  I kind of want to relive it…

Healthy Weekend

Itz been a healthy weekend over here, my friends; how about for you?  I think that the term “healthy” refers to so much more than merely exercising and eating right.  While those factors are definitely incredibly important to living a healthy life, being “healthy” also involves taking care of yourself, both mentally and physically, and fostering relationships with those you choose to surround yourself with.

All of such which are, of course, marvelous, which is why we’re starting the week off celebrating Healthy Diva’s Marvelous in my Monday! #MIMM

MiMM

Healthy is… spending time with your family.  On Friday night, we went out to dinner at The Pasta House to celebrate my nephew Jackson’s fifth birthday!

jacob jackson

Of course Jacob had to help hold the cake and blow out his candles.  Those two boys do everything together!  Best of cousins, best of friends.

Healthy is… nourishing your body with healthy food and fueling it when itz hungry.

chobani

Apple Cinnamon Chobani topped with more cinnamon and almond butter makes the most delicious and satisfying snack!

Healthy is… hanging out with your friends and sitting around a newly built backyard fire pit enjoying each other’s company.

fire pit

On Saturday night, our good friends Stevie and Whitney invited us over for dinner.  They grilled flank steak, asparagus, and potatoes.  Very delicious!

Healthy is… moving your body.  Exercise IS important!  Don’t forget to enjoy the beauty nature offers when the weather permits, too.

pond

Diana and I headed out Sunday morning for a five-mile walk around her neighborhood.  While it was a simple walk, we got in our workout for the day, kept a brisk pace, and took in the views along the way.

Healthy is… doing things you love with people you love.  Jonny, his parents, and I went to the Cardinals game on Sunday afternoon.

jonny cards

My Running Skirts red and white headband and my Oakley sunglasses match perfectly with the rest of our Cardinal red!  While we didn’t exactly bring home a winner, we certainly loved the hot weather and sunshine on our faces!

Healthy is… rooting for the best baseball team ever – the St. Louis Cardinals!

St. Louis Cardinals

St. Louis IS Cardinal Nation!  The atmosphere is always a blast at Busch Stadium as St. Louis fans are constantly pumped up and cheering on our team.  I love how you can see the Arch in Busch Stadium; it makes for a very pretty backdrop.  Now how many cities can say that about their stadium?  That’s what I thought.  Go Birds!

What was healthy about your weekend?  Favorite baseball team?  Cardinals…

Marvelous Bridal Shower

My best friend’s bridal shower was on Saturday. I, along with the other bridesmaids, hosted it, but we gave it at my parents’ house, so my mom did a great deal of the work.  You see, when my mom throws an event, she goes all out.  I tried to help the two days before, but really ended up just following her around like a puppy dog asking, “What can I do? How can I help?”  I did learn a lot from my incredible momma and I do know Diana and the other guests thoroughly enjoyed the shower.

diana

The entire event was absolutely marvelous which is perfect for Marvelous in my Monday with Katie at Healthy Diva Life.

MiMM

My mom and Diana’s mom made most of the food, but us bridesmaids contributed a little here and there.  My mom set a gorgeous table and there was quite the delicious spread for the ladies!  No one went hungry, that’s for sure.

bridal shower lunch

Starting at the top left and going clockwise: strawberry salad, Asian salad, vegetable cups, asparagus and mint egg frittatas, fruit salad, spinach balls, beautiful flower arrangement designed by my mom, turkey dollar roll sandwiches, tomato and cucumber relish tray, tuna salad, cream cheese pesto bake, and apricot brie wheel.  Amazing, right?

After opening gifts, it was dessert time!  Ok, the guests had desserts while Diana was opening her million gifts, and immediately after, all the bridesmaids rushed over to the dessert table.  Can you blame us?

bridal shower dessert

YUM!  Brownies, blueberry muffins, strawberry trifle, peanut butter jelly bars, chocolate covered strawberries, oreo cake balls, and chocolate chip cookies.  Lucky for us, we had plenty of leftovers!  It really was a lovely shower; I know we couldn’t have done it without my amazing mother. I’m so honored to be a part of Diana’s wedding festivities.  She gave us bridesmaids an awesome gift for hosting her shower.  She wrote us each an individualized poem and at the end she told us she was treating us to getting our hair done on the day of her wedding!!  Great gift!! I highly recommend it for all you bride-to-be’s out there!!

What else is marvelous? Hmm, oh yes!  I got to see my neighbor boys David and Michael over the weekend!  They grew up across the street from me and there was a few of us neighborhood kids that were super close.  Unfortunately, most of them have moved away, so whenever anyone is in town we’re sure to catch up!

david michael

David is about to graduate from the Air Force Academy and head to law school and Michael is producing Broadway shows in New York.  Impressive pair of brothers!  We’ve all grown up in the last 20 years or so, eh?

michael david

I’m officially registered for Best Body Bootcamp!  I’ve been craving a training schedule and this will give me exactly that.  Tina knows what’s up and I’m sure her workouts will be challenging and just the change of pace I’m looking for.

And because my sister didn’t send me this picture in time for my Scottsdale Snapshot post, I’m adding it now because itz certainly marvelous!

What’s marvelous in your Monday?

Snow Day

We had our first snow day in St. Louis yesterday!  And we have another one today!  Itz awesome because they called us off the night before, so we got to sleep in. Or at least in theory we would have gotten to sleep in, but at 5:00 in the morning (usual wake up time) I heard Zoey… throwing up in our bed.  Not a fun way to wake up, especially on my day off!  Luckily she was feeling better later and made up for it with several rounds of fetch and tug-of-war and looking adorable as ever.

zoey

Around 9:00 or so, I met my friend Diana at the gym where we completed this workout.  Itz always fun meeting friends at the gym and even better when there are no time constraints!

diana

After the gym we came back to my house where I prepared breakfast for us both.  I made Diana a pancake and topped it with Designer Whey White Chocolate protein frosting (1 scoop protein powder + a little water), fresh raspberries, and sprinkles.  I enjoyed a Three Cheese Quiche, Sausage Links, Peppers, & Onions from Diet-to-Go.

breakfast

After that is when the snow and ice came, so I was bound to my house for the rest of the day.  Well, I visited my grandparents before it got too nasty out.  I got a lot done at home which always feels good.  I finished my students’ report cards, did laundry, read lots of awesome blogs, threw dinner in the crockpot, and made a fresh batch of my Pulp Bread.  Per my grandmother’s suggestion, I increased the cinnamon and honey to make it a tad sweeter, and [like always] she was right!  The extra sweetness was delicious and Jonny even noticed a difference, too.

When there was about seven inches of snow on the ground, Jonny decided to go out and start shoveling the driveway.  I was feeling a bit stir crazy myself, so we bundled up and headed out.  While he shoveled, I took a walk around our neighborhood (I’m such a big help!).  It was less than a mile, but holy cow it was tough!  Nothing was plowed or shoveled and trekking through thick snow is hard work!  It was nice little extra bout of cardio.  Good thing I was bundled up!

snow day

And that’s how I spent my snow day.  Let’s see what today brings!

How’s the weather where you live?  Plans this weekend?

I’m thinkin’…

I have a lot of random thoughts going on; hence, today’s post may be a bit jumbled since I’m going to dump ‘em all out.  But hey itz Friday, so that’s gotta count for something, right?  Right.

I’m thinkin’… I’m excited to lift weights this morning!  I had been lifting weights on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, but this week was a little different.  I did a total body workout on Monday, took a rest day on Tuesday, and then incline walked on Wednesday and Thursday.  It made me miss strength training (yes, I really do miss those weights!), so I’ll be sure to get in a good workout this morning.

workout

I’m thinkin’… Mizuno compression socks are great when traveling – in the car or plane!  They keep the blood flowing while minimizing swelling.

mizuno socks

I’m thinkin’… I should probably take a short break from almond butter.  I’ve gone through two jars in ten days.  I’m all about enjoying foods and no deprivation, however I’m also a believer in moderation and two jars in ten days just is not moderation.  (Raw creamy unsalted from Trader Joe’s is my favorite!)  I’ll be back for you, almond butter.

almond butter

(No worries: you KNOW I’ll scrape out every last bit of that almond butter during this morning’s breakfast of oats in a jar!)

I’m thinkin’… Chobani is SO generous for sponsoring my school’s first “Wellness Wednesday.”  I’m on the Wellness Committee and we want to start providing healthy snacks for our staff members once a month.  We had such a positive response from people trying Chobani for the first time – they loved it! (I mean, who doesn’t??)  And now about 80 more people know that Chobani is a great snack, especially on the go.  Whenever people ask me about yogurt, I always suggest greek yogurt since itz packed with protein and keeps you full much longer than regular yogurt.

chobani

I’m thinkin’… I had a lovely dinner with my friend Danielle and her daughter Addyson last night at Sweet Tomatoes.  I’m not usually a buffet fan, but all you can eat salad bar with fresh veggies?  Count me in!  (My Instagram friends saw the massive salad beast I made last night.)  Addyson had fun tasting lots of healthy food: broccoli, butternut squash, sunflower seeds, kidney beans, spinach, and chickpeas.  Start those healthy habits young!  “Mmm mmm mmm!  This is good!” Yes, she really said that while munching on a piece of broccoli.

addyson

I’m thinkin… I wish Zoey felt better.  She has really bad allergies and gets skin infections a lot.  We had to take her back to the vet (again!), and now she is on several different medications.  Well, last night after dinner she got sick.  I’m hoping she tolerates the meds a bit better today and we can kick this infection!  But she’s still super cute…

zoey

What are YOU thinkin’ today?

Push-Up Challenge

There was so much marvelous in my weekend, I hardly know where to begin.  Oh wait, yes I do.  I’ll begin with a vlog that we filmed Friday night during our dinner party with some dear friends.  After dinner (and dessert and wine), Diana told us about her “Push-Up Challenge” that she was embarking on for the New Year.  The goal is to eventually work up to 100 push-ups.  As each day passes, she’ll do one more push-up than the day before.  (I may not be all for resolutions, but I’m all about making strides to live a healthy life!)  Friday was January 4th, and Whitney and I decided to play along.

What do YOU do at your dinner parties?  Push ups, handstands, itz all good. ;)   Before I served dinner, I set out Wild Harvest Sea Salt Pita Chips and guacamole for munching.

wild harvest pita chips

The pita chips were perfect for dipping!  They were super sturdy (I need a serious chip when it comes to thick dip), and had a great flavor with a hint of sea salt.  Wild Harvest also makes Parmesan Garlic & Herb and Cinnamon Sugar Pita Chips which I can’t wait to try.

For dinner, I baked chicken (sprinkled some Italian bread crumbs on top), steamed broccoli, and followed this recipe for the pasta.  I think it turned out well.

dinner

For dessert I made S’more Cookie Bars (again) which are always a hit.  I mean who doesn’t like graham cracker crust, marshmallow, and chocolate?

smore bar

It was a marvelous dinner party, indeed.  The next morning I met Whitney for a workout.  We went to a studio and did a bootcamp class.  Full review will come later this week, but I wanted to give a shoutout: Fitness With Anika is AWESOME!

Fitness with Anika

Sunday morning I headed to my parents’.   They’ve got an amazing home gym in their basement, so I took full advantage of that.  I walked on the treadmill for 35 minutes (speed 3.8, incline 8) to cover 2 miles, and finished with some light weights.

basement workout

*I LOVE those shorts from Yogi Clothing!

Sunday was also a day of grocery shopping.  First was Trader Joe’s, and then was Whole Foods.  I do love both stores, but yesterday Whole Foods took the cake.  The employees at Whole Foods are always super friendly and incredibly knowledgable.  One of the items I had gotten was a bottle of coconut water.   The cashier was asking me if I liked any of the flavors.  (Not really.)  She then asked another employee to go grab something.

Next, she started telling me about how bottled coconut waters (and fruit and vegetable juices) are almost always pasteurized.  During the pasteurization process, fruits and vegetables lose some of their nutritional value.  She wanted me to try this Harvest Harmless 100% Raw Coconut Water.

coconut water

It tasted SO good!  There was definitely a distinguishable taste between this raw version compared to the pasteurized kind.  I think this had a stronger coconut flavor, which I like.  I absolutely love learning about and trying new products.

If you’ll remember, this is the second time an employee at Whole Foods has gifted me a new-to-me item.  (The first was a carton of flax milk.)  Best employees and customer service ever!  Thanks, Whole Foods!

Thanks also to Katie at Healthy Diva Eats for this Marvelous Monday.

MIMM

Are you participating in any type of New Years challenge?  Have you ever been gifted a new product at Whole Foods?  Have you ever tasted raw coconut water?  Happy Monday! :)

Mexican Omelette

I hope you had an absolute wonderful Christmas if you celebrate.  Jonny and I do not as we’re Jewish, so we went to see This Is 40 with my parents.  Itz hilarious and I definitely recommend it if you’re in the mood for a good laugh!  Although we don’t celebrate Christmas in the traditional sense, it doesn’t mean we don’t do Christmasy things on the day of.  The Itz’s dear friends have been inviting them over for Christmas dinner for the past 25 years, and the last few years I’ve been fortunate enough to become a part of that tradition.  So Jonny and I not only ate a delicious Christmas dinner, we even got a picture in front of their beautiful tree!

christmas

Being Wednesday, itz also the last What I Ate Wednesday in December.  No!  Make that the last WIAW in 2012!  Woooooaaaaah!!!  Thanks as always to Jenn at Peas and Crayons for hosting all the WIAW parties each and every Wednesday.

Can’t wait to see what 2013 brings!  Speaking of 2013, have you entered my New Year New Rules healthy lifestyle giveaway yet?  Winner is being announced on Friday, so make sure you enter now.  For now, let’s talk food.  I’m only sharing breakfast and dinner with you because breakfast was really brunch and there were many snacks eaten in between.  My days are always so thrown off when I don’t follow a schedule, like when I’m in school at work.  But my breakfast sure is stellar and I even have a recipe for ya!

Mexican Omelette 1

So there were a few steps in this, but it actually came together rather quickly.  The day before, I threw a pound of black beans in the crockpot with some garlic and a diced onion.  Yesterday morning, I browned some lean turkey meat on the stove.  Then I added corn, green pepper, orange pepper, onion, garlic, and the black beans.  I also added cayenne pepper because we like it hot!  This made a HUGE pot; I’ll be eating this mixture for breakfast, lunch, and dinner over the next several days, I’m sure.

For the omelette part, I used three eggwhites and a scoop of the Mexican mixture.  Once my omelette was cooked, I sliced half an avocado, added a dollop of plain Chobani greek yogurt, and a sprinkle of cayenne pepper.  Mmm mmm mmm!  Talk about super filling and loaded with protein.

Since I’m not showing you a lunch, instead I’m going to show you a great picture of my parents and in-laws.  Jonny and I went out to dinner with my in-laws and his grandparents on Christmas Eve and then we went to my parents’ home for an after-dinner cocktail.  Jonny and I are so incredibly lucky to have our parents.

We arrived at our Christmas party and were greeted by a gorgeous table set by Caren.

Christmas dinner was definitely a treat.  We had beef tenderloin, Brussel sprouts with a sweet vinegar glaze, mashed potatoes, and tomatoes with artichokes.  So tasty.

xmas dinner

Dessert was an assortment of cookies, as well as these S’mores Sandwich Bar Cookies.  They’re a bit difficult to see on the plate, but I assure you they were fantastic.

While I thoroughly enjoyed all the decadent food and drink over the past couple of days, you know I took my own advice and hit the gym for a sweat session in between all the meals.  I even sported some green and red on Christmas day.

I just did an easy 35 minutes on the elliptical, but it was better than nothing.  Gotta stay active!

What was the best thing you ate on Christmas?  Did you workout?

Turkey Trot with Pro Compression

On Thanksgiving, I ran a Turkey Trot race like so many other active Americans.  It wasn’t something I had planned on; afterall, I’m not really running anymore.  However, I texted my good friend Jess to see if she was in town for Thanksgiving, and she said she was and was planning on running a race the following day.  How lovely, I thought, I’ll join you!

When I found out the course had a 5K and a 10K option, I immediately told Jess we’d be doing the 10K.  I mean, go big or go home, right?  Especially since I’m not running that much, I wanted to enjoy my miles while I had em!  Our goal was to finish the race without any walking… and that’s exactly what we did.

We finished the 10K in 54 minutes and 40 seconds, a 9:07 pace.  Not too bad for not really running anymore.  I’ll take it!  It definitely helped that Jess and I had a lot to catch up on during our run.  I love running with friends and this was no different!

As you can see, I wore my sparkly silver Sweaty Band which I didn’t have to fuss with at all, and I received several compliments while I was wearing it!  In addition, I tried out my new PRO Compression socks.  First of all, I loved how they matched my outfit to a tee!

I was a bit worried how my legs would feel the day after the run.  For one thing, itz been a good two weeks since my last jog.  And, the day before the race I completed my Basic Leg Workout which left me sore for days last week when I did it.  This race would be the perfect time to try out the compression socks as they claim to improve blood flow and speed up recovery time.  Directly after the race, my legs felt pretty tight.

I attributed the mild tightness to the chilly temperature of the race.  It was about 45 degrees while running, definitely colder than I was used to.  After some stretching, my legs began to feel better almost instantly.

They weren’t sore, just tight.  And you know they must have been feeling fine since I was still able to do this after running six miles:

No, no, that’s not me stretching.  I actually did have a few feet of air, but my sister insisted on staying on her balcony while I went on the lawn to jump. #makesnosense  I knew I needed to put the socks through the ultimate test, so… another balcony shot:

PRO Compression socks pass the test!  In all honesty, I really do like the socks.  I did not experience any soreness post-race, which I’m pretty shocked about.  The socks stayed in place while running, and I do believe they aided in recovery.  I’m actually really surprised how not sore I was from my leg workout the day before and the addition of running!  The socks must’ve done something because the week prior I had trouble walking several days after lifting legs!  Maybe I’ll wear the socks after lifting more often.  Hmm…

Did you run a Turkey Trot race?  Do you wear compression socks?

*Disclaimer: I was provided a pair of PRO Compression socks to review with no monetary compensation.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.
