the worst half marathon ever

Let’s call this post – the worst half marathon ever.

Because of me, not because of the actual race at all.  Actually, the Go! St. Louis Half Marathon is one of my favorite races.  It’s near and dear to my heart because it was my first half marathon I ever did (in 2007!) and, of course, it’s in my beloved hometown St. Louis.  It’s always a challenging course with lots of hills, but when properly trained, it’s a great race!  You get to see many parts of our city, run across bridges, see the Clydesdales at the brewery, Busch Stadium, and more.

Barbie and I on the Arch riverfront before the race began.

But you see, that’s where the problem lies.  I was not properly trained for this half marathon.  In fact, I wasn’t trained at all.  Not in the slightest.  Like so little training that I had trouble figuring out my race day outfit based on the weather and was frantically texting Barbie at 4:45 the morning of.  The extent of my training is laughable.  Some may even call it foolish.  Before this race, the last time I ran was four weeks prior.  It was two miles and that was tough.  So you can imagine how the race went.

So why in the world did I do it, you may be wondering?  Barbie.  (Ok, fine “Barbara,” but she’ll always be Barbie to me.  25 years later and I’m not changing what I call her.  Ever.)  Back in 2007, Barbie convinced me to do this very same race.  We were both away at college, and we decided we’d train separately and come back to St. Louis to run together.  Many years since then, we’ve completed this race together.  A couple of months ago while at brunch, she told me she signed up to run.  Sure, I thought, why not?  I’ll join ya!

Thinking the upcoming race would motivate me to get my butt in gear, I happily signed up.  I counted the weeks before, laughed to myself as I realized training would be challenging given my schedule and the weather, but figured I’d be fine.  After all, how many half marathons have I completed?  Fifteen-ish, I believe.

Check out our giant smiles before we started the 13.1!

I kept telling myself that I had done these races a million times, and I’d be fine.  I knew I certainly wouldn’t be earning a PR or anything, but I figured my body would remember what to do and go into race mode.  I also knew I wasn’t going to worry about my time.  I didn’t even wear any sort of running device to track my mileage or time (GASP!).  My last half marathon (also with Barbie) was two years ago and my training consisted of six runs with my longest run being six miles.  We ended up running the entire distance with a final time of 2:12:39.

This year was a different story.  Right out of the gate I told Barbie I felt good.  She chuckled.  100 feet later, I said the same thing.  After mile three, I begged Barbie to walk for a minute.  Barbie is one of those runners that no matter how “good” of shape she is in, she can always run.  She was basically running circles around me and so kindly pledged to stay with me the whole race.  The first four miles were rough.  Miles four through seven were a little better, and I might even dare to say we found a groove.  Mile eight was hard and my knee started throbbing.  I wondered if I’d be able to finish, but vowed I would since I have never had to have a DNF (did not finish).  We took a few more walking breaks, and somehow mile 11 was upon us.  Mile 11 was also where the first MARATHONER passed us and went barreling ahead to the finish line.  That was amazing to see and provided a bit of inspiration.  This guy was doing double the distance as us and was killing it!

I think we ran the last two miles with no walking breaks.  Although that mile 13 felt like it would never end.  Barbie kept telling me we were almost there, and we could hear the music at the finish line.  Well let me tell you what.  That finish line music was loud because I’m pretty sure we heard it an entire mile away.  But low and behold, we crossed that finish line and earned that pretty hardware!

Every bone, every muscle, every single part of my body was in pain.  When I’m in shape, I’m not even sore after races at all.  I could barely walk and I know it’s just going to get worse.  But you know what?  I DID IT!  Would I do it again?  You betchya!  But you better believe I’ll train, at least somewhat, for it!  It was the hardest race I’ve ever run.  I don’t usually wear my race shirts, but tomorrow I sure am.  That is, if I can get out of bed and actually walk.

Yeah, we were still smiling at the end.  They may not have been quite as big, but they were there.  Then we were laughing in between grimacing at every step we took.  Ok, I’m off to put my feet up yet again, possibly for the remainder of the day.

Have you ever run a race you didn’t train for? How’d that go?

Soft Surroundings Birthday Event

must tell you about the fast-approaching Soft Surroundings Birthday Event!  I’m going to give you details first, then explain how I won a makeover there and how my fourth graders ended up on the news! 🙂

Soft Surroundings Birthday Event – For those of you that aren’t aware, Soft Surroundings started right here in St. Louis! They will be celebrating the 11th birthday of their first store, which is located at The Boulevard – St. Louis (across from the Galleria)!  Soft Surroundings began in 1999 as an online/catalog retailer and they now have 39 stores across the country with new stores opening every few weeks. The store at The Boulevard – St. Louis will be celebrating their 11th birthday on 11/11 (golden birthday!) and throughout the weekend of November 11-13. There, you can enjoy some drinks, treats, and a complimentary makeover while shopping!

soft surroundings interview

A couple nights before school started, my mom told my sister and I that she wanted to take us out to dinner for a girls night.  My dad came over to babysit William while my mom picked me up to meet Stephanie.  When we got there, my mom suggested we stop in Soft Surroundings so we could do a little shopping before dinner.  Stephanie and I thought like it sounded like a great plan since shopping with my mom is always fun!  Well, we walked in the store and Dana Dean, reporter for Show Me St. Louis, popped out from behind some clothing racks, threw a microphone in my face, and asked if I was Lindsay.  I was in complete shock looking at my mom and sister like, “What in the world is going on?”

Dana explained that Stephanie nominated me for a teacher makeover at Soft Surroundings and I won!  We had such a fun evening at the store!  The ladies at Soft Surroundings picked out several outfits for me to try on and model.

softsurroundings

I had been in the store a few times, but had never tried their clothes on.  I was amazed at how soft every fabric on each item was!  And it’s no surprise because Soft Surroundings takes great pride in choosing the very best fabrics for their clothing line.  They have so many gorgeous pieces that are perfect for teaching and everyday wear.  Part of the makeover included me selecting an outfit to keep; it was an easy choice and there was an obvious favorite of the many I tried.

soft-surroundings-makeover

You may recognize this outfit from my Back to School 2016 post.  The makeover was such perfect timing as I hadn’t even bought a new back to school outfit this year!  I love how classic, yet unique the top is and how it can really be paired with anything.  I’ll be layering it during the fall and winter.  The leggings are so versatile and actually called their “have to have leggings.”  Once you try them on, you’ll understand why.  They’re comfortable and flattering for all.  I liked them so much that my parents bought me two more pairs (in brown and gray!) along with a couple other items for my birthday.  Soft Surroundings also let me choose the necklace I’m wearing and a couple beauty items.  I was spoiled!

It was a fabulous night and I’m so appreciative of everyone in involved, especially my sister for nominating me and my mom for being my biggest supporter!

A couple of weeks later, KSDK came to my classroom to film in preparation for the segment that would be airing on Show Me St. Louis.  My students thought it was the coolest thing ever!  Check out the clip here:

To help celebrate Soft Surroundings golden birthday, I was able to select one item from their new line.  It was a tough choice, but ultimately I went with a plaid top that can be worn as a shirt, tunic, or dress.

soft surroundings plaid

Seriously, so comfortable!  I wore it last night to family dinner and my mom and my grandma couldn’t believe how soft the material was!  It’s perfect to cozy up in or wear out and about with leggings and boots.

If you’re in St. Louis, I do hope you will join us at the Soft Surroundings Birthday Event this weekend! It will be a lot of fun and you’ll get to check out the gorgeous store (and have drinks, treats, a makeover, and more!).

Sante Fitness and Wellness GIVEAWAY

A couple of weeks ago I had the awesome opportunity to participate in a rooftop twilight yoga session at the Chase Park Plaza in St. Louis, hosted by Sante Fitness and Wellness, with other local influencers and friends.

All photos in post taken by local photographer Megan Magray.

The view was spectacular, the yoga was relaxing, and the entire experience was perfect.  I love love love being outside, and I definitely don’t make enough time in my life for yoga.  It was fun to see a couple of familiar faces, Clare and Katie, who I hadn’t seen in awhile.

We reconnected and took obligatory blogger photos together.

Our hosts really went all out for us. They provided a lovely spread of fruits and vegetables, had refreshing cucumber water, made delicious smoothies that are offered at Sante (the “thinny mint” was the best!), and ensured each detail was attended to for making our visit unforgettable.

santewellness

Sante Fitness and Wellness focuses on Fitness, Wellness, and Balance for their members.  They have state-of-the-art fitness equipment, wifi, complimentary locker service and covered parking.  Their facility is exquisite and spacious with 18,000 square feet.

It was the perfect night for yoga.  It was a clear evening with temperatures celebrating the end of summer and the beginning of fall.  We had time before yoga began to enjoy the views, stretch out, and chat with one another.

The energy was casual and relaxed, just as yoga should be, and our instructor from Sante, Ashley, did a great job feeding off the mood.  She let us know this would be an average yoga class; it was fine for beginners, and more advanced yogis had the options to take the poses to the next level.

yoga-rooftop

Being so busy with the beginning of school, yoga felt particularly good to be able to focus on nothing more than breathing, stretching, holding poses, letting go mentally, and taking in the beautiful scenery.  It was just what I needed!

As class continued, the sun was setting which was magnificent from the rooftop.  Apparently Sante Fitness and Wellness hosts rooftop classes every month, and not just yoga either!  Spinning is another option that would be a lot of fun to take.  For my participation in the event, I received a free week at Sante. I’m trying to figure out a good time to utilize it, so I can go a few times.  There are additional group fitness classes that they offer that I’d love to try including yoga, pilates, kettlebell, cycle, aqua, and more.  The facility is beautiful and they have a few different membership options, as well as student rates.

introducing kidzxplor

Moms!  (And nannies and grandmas and aunts and friends and anyone else who is a caretaker for a kiddo or anyone who needs the best gift ever!)  I have literally discovered the coolest thing for kids and moms alike.  You all know me.  You know how active I like to stay.  Especially during the summer when we have more free time than usual, I’m always looking for new and exciting activities and events to bring William to.  We’ve done our fair share of exploring St. Louis this summer, but it just got easier and less expensive, believe it or not.

Introducing kidzxplor!

kidzxplor

kidzxplor is a simple way for parents to expose their children to exciting new activities and experiences, like art, music, fitness, open play, cooking and theater, all included in a low monthly membership fee. This web and app-based service allows a member to book classes with no long term commitment, when you want it, helping you to unlock your child’s passion and potential.

I love signing up William for various classes and events around town, but let’s be real.  That can add up very quickly!  Not to mention hidden membership costs on top of the fee of each class!  This is one of the reasons kidzxplor is so amazing and so worth it.  You pay $99 per month (and siblings receive a reduced rate of $59 per month!) and receive unlimited classes for the many businesses that have partnered up with kidzxplor.

As a BETA tester, I received a few classes free of charge, but next summer, you better believe I’ll be signing up for all three months I’m off school.  Since I’m a working mom, I probably will not sign up throughout the year, especially while William is so young, just due to time restraints as we would probably only be able to do one class a week (on the weekends).  However, as William gets older and is able to stay up later and more classes become available, it is definitely something I would consider.  However, in the summer or for stay at home moms, I cannot recommend it enough!

So far, we’ve done two classes.  The first was at Gymboree which is a kid’s gym.

gymboree july16

During the class, there was plenty of time for free play on the equipment, but there were also parts that were structured and led by a teacher.  Gymboree really encourages imaginative play, so the kids pretended to ride a horse, have a horse tail, and feed the horse.  (Obviously, horses were the theme of the day.)  It was fun to see William use his imagination.  His “horse tail” kept falling off, so he was constantly checking to make sure it was still there.  So funny!  Usually with Gymboree (and other gym classes), you have to pay a membership fee on top of the cost of class.  Plus, you commit to every week, and if you need to cancel you have some restrictions for rescheduling.

Kidzplor is awesome because you can check out a place like Gymboree without paying the membership fee and without committing.  Of course if you end up loving it, you are more than welcome to sign up on your own, or you can do a few classes each month while still maintaining your non-committal schedule.  Even better, you can sign up for a class through kidzxplor as soon as two hours prior to the class starting.  So one Sunday when we had no plans, I checked the schedule and saw Gymboree was available early in the morning.  It was perfect to get out of the house, stay active, and have fun!

Another place we checked out thanks to Kidzplor is Little Fishes Swim School.

littlefishes july16

Little Fishes has been our favorite so far!  They have three salt water pools and teach kids to swim.  William and I do the classes together right now until he is able to master a few skills; then he will level up and be in the water on his own with the instructor.  William is usually VERY clingy to me in the water, but did AWESOME during his first class!  He was swimming to and with his teacher, jumping off the side to him, and was smiling the whole time!

At William’s age, Little Fishes mission is to get kids to be comfortable in the water and teach them basic skills, so they are able to stay safe in the water.  Most likely, we will be signing up for classes to Little Fishes on our own.  If it weren’t for kidzxplor, I’m not sure we ever would have tried a class or made the commitment.

Right now, kidzxplor is launching in St. Louis on August 1, 2016.  Soon, it will be launching in other cities nationwide.  Be sure to like the kidzxplor Facebook page to stay up to date on information, see when new partnerships are made, and to learn when kidzxplor is available elsewhere!  Mommas in St. Louis, you HAVE to sign up for kidzplor in a few days.  I cannot recommend it enough!

What activities are your child involved in?

William’s First Cardinals Game

William’s first Cardinals game was on July 4th.  It had been raining for the past several days, but seemed to let up a bit on the Fourth.  Sure enough, on our way down to Busch Stadium, the rain picked up again causing a rain delay.  We killed some time at the Science Center which was just as fun for William.  Finally, when it was almost game time, we made it to the stadium.  And who else to take William to his very first Cardinals game, but Yaya and Pops, of course!

cardinals first game july16

William was a champ and made it through seven and a half innings!  Yaya did a lot of entertaining as well as giving him a play by play of what exactly he was seeing.

cardinals game yaya july16

That was William’s face / answer to, “Are you having fun?” as he excitedly shouted YES!  The people behind us even commented how happy he was and how great he was doing at the game.

cardinalsshirt

William wore his very own personalized Cardinals shirt which was made by A Child’s Boutique.  Keri, the owner, is wonderful and said this is the most popular Cardinals design, but she can make any shirt / outfit.  This is who Stephanie always uses to make her kids’ personalized shirts.

William cheered for the Cardinals with Yaya and Pops.

cardinals clap

We had a fourth seat for him to sit on, but he mostly sat on laps.  The extra seat was nice to have a little extra space and it gave him some standing room.  In between innings, we either went down to the dugout to try and catch a ball or Yaya gave him Superman rides!

cardinals laugh

He was seriously so full of smiles and laughter the entire game!

Think he had fun?

Blackberry Picking at Eckert’s

Something that must be on your summer to do list if you’re in or around St. Louis is Blackberry Picking at Eckert’s.  Eckert’s is a year-round farm located in Belleville, Illinois that has seasonal crops and a lot more to do than just picking blackberries.  Strawberry picking was earlier this summer, and peaches will be available next week.  William and I went on Sunday with my sister Stephanie and her two kids.

eckerts blackberries

Little did I know that there is so much to do at Eckert’s!  Of course there is fruit picking, but also vegetables and flowers.  There is a country store that is filled with all sorts of fun items.

eckerts2016

To get out to the fields where the blackberries were, we had to take a short tractor ride, which, of course, William was more than thrilled about.  He kept saying, “Bumpy ride!”

eckerts tractor

Then off to the fields we went!

eckertsblackberries

I tried to explain to William that blackberries start off green, then turn red, then finally black when you can eat them.  He liked picking the green ones best.

eckerts basket

This was the first time that he was really able to pick the fruit himself.  It’s so much fun teaching him how food grows from the ground and we can eat it!

eckerts picking blackberries

He really did look thoroughly to find the perfect blackberry to add to his basket.

eckerts 2016

It was a scorcher out there, but there were a few water stations in the fields where we were able to seek shade and hydrate.  After we’d had enough sun, we took the tractor back.  The whole farm is truly breathtaking and such a magnificent place to take photos.

eckerts lake

After we cooled off in the air conditioning, we went back out to explore some more.  On the weekends, there are pony rides, train rides, and carnival rides.

eckerts train

The train was William’s favorite.  Those two could have stayed on there all day.

William also liked playing put-put mini golf and finding bikes to ride.

eckerts bike

And for the first time ever, William rode a horse!

eckerts horse

I had tried before, but he was scared.  This time, he clasped tightly to the saddle with one hand and held on to me with his other.  He loved it!

After we spent a couple of hours doing all the fun activities, we were hungry for lunch.  The restaurant had a 30 minute wait, so we placed a to-go order and ate ice cream first.

eckerts ice cream

We heard no complaints from anyone about that!

It was a wonderful day at Eckert’s and I highly recommend making a day of it.  In fact, we may just go back next week for peaches!

Have you done any picking this summer?

801 Fish

The sun was out all weekend, and I’m pretty sure all of St. Louis got out to enjoy it!  If not, I’m so sorry because the weather was absolutely perfect and just what we needed!  It officially feels like spring is right around the corner.  This sunshine and warm weather needs to be here to stay!  The weekend was awesome, plain and simple.  When the weather is good, it makes everything better.  When you’re surrounded by people you love, well, life just doesn’t get better than that, and that’s what this weekend was all about!

William was ready for the weekend before the weekend even began.

sleep carseat feb16

He fell asleep on the way to school on Friday morning with his train signs in his hand.  Lately he’s been very into hoarding things in his hands while he plays and refuses to put anything down until he literally cannot hold anything else.

My nephew Jacob turned seven on Friday, so everyone went out to dinner to celebrate.  I didn’t get any cute photos of William, but he was enamored with his cousins, as always, and LOVED singing Happy Birthday over and over.  We went to Jacob’s birthday party on Saturday morning.  It was at an indoor soccer park and Star Wars theme.  Stephanie went above and beyond, just like she does for every event.  After the party, we came home for lunch and a nap before meeting my friend at the park.  The weather was almost 80 degrees, just perfect!

We enjoyed lots of time outdoors and took Zoey on a walk when we got home.  William was giddy in the sunshine and was laughing as he ran with the dog.

run smile feb16

I love that he loves the outdoors as much as his momma!

That evening, I went on a date to 801 Fish.  I had previously been to 801 Chophouse, but 801 Fish was newer to St. Louis.  Everything about 801 Fish was awesome – the decor, ambiance, and food; it did not feel like we were in St. Louis at all.  We ordered and ate enough food for an army and left very satisfied.

801fish

  • Grilled Oyster: The two times I had oysters previous to this, I wasn’t a fan of the texture.  However, grilling the oysters makes a HUGE difference!  They were seasoned three different ways.  We both agreed the butter Parmesan ones were the best!
  • Jumbo Shrimp & Crab Meat: Can’t go wrong here.
  • Lobster Bisque: We shared a bowl; I love lobster bisque, and theirs definitely did not disappoint.
  • Hushpuppies: These were served with honey maple butter and reminded us of breakfast!  The hushpuppies were good (the butter was the best lol), but we would probably try a different side next time.
  • Saffron Tomato Cioppino: Littleneck clams, jumbo shrimp, sea scallops, pei mussels, spicy tomato broth – This was his, and I was too full to try it.  He gave it two thumbs up and finished every bite.
  • Pan Seared New Bedford Sea Scallops: Parsnip puree, roasted butternut squash, hen of the woods mushrooms, crispy pancetta, cranberry gastrique – This was my entree, and oh my goodness it was fabulous!  I would definitely order it again, but without all of our appetizers, because I could only eat one and a half scallops by the time it arrived!  Everything about it was awesome.

I was STUFFED.  I said I couldn’t eat another bite.  But then dessert was ordered.

figgy toffee pudding

And I easily had another bite. Or twelve.  But who’s counting?  This was their figgy toffee pudding.  The homemade vanilla ice cream complimented the warm dessert.  It was gone in no time.

I would highly recommend 801 Fish.  Just recapping our dinner makes me drool.  Our server told us that they get all of their seafood within 36 hours of it being caught!  That’s pretty impressive for a place like St. Louis.

Sunday was a little cooler than Saturday, but the sun was shining, so we were outside a lot.  We went to a friend’s house in the morning, so the little ones could play together.  Blowing bubbles, drawing with chalk, and kicking balls were the highlights!

bubbles feb16

William did really well with blowing bubbles and only licked the stick a couple of times!  The rest of Sunday included a Starbucks vanilla latte, a four mile walk around a lake, my first trip to Costco, meet up with girl friends, and family Sunday night dinner.  Couldn’t have asked for a better weekend!

Did you get outside this weekend?

Burn 1000 Workout

Over winter break, my mom, sister, sister-in-law, and I all checked out a new to us workout studio in St. Louis. It’s called Burn 1000 and it was HARD!  The last time we all worked out together was the month prior when we did an Orangetheory Fitness class.  After reading Burn 1000’s website, we learned it was similar to OTF in the sense that it was a high intensity workout using a combination of the treadmill and floor work.  We all agreed that we liked Burn 1000 better than OTF; however, we also all agreed that Burn 1000 was much, much harder!  Let me explain.

burn1000 workout

So, OTF’s class is divided into two sections: floor and treadmill, both lasting about 25 minutes.  This is how every class is, to my understanding.  Burn 1000 is different in that we alternated between the treadmill and the floor, but did ten minute intervals; so we were on the treadmill and the floor three times each.

Since I’m not in the best shape right now, the treadmill portion of Burn 1000 felt a lot more manageable since it was just ten minutes.  That being said, it was more challenging because we never really got true recovery time.  We would get about 15 seconds, but that’s it.  (As opposed to OTF where we walked for a period of time to recover.)

burn1000 treadmill

Pros of the Burn 1000 Workout:

  • INTENSE and HARD workout
  • Very sore the following day
  • Short intervals (10 minutes, though the website says the intervals can be 5, 10, or 15 minutes)
  • Great instructor! Our instructor was on point with keeping both groups – floor and treadmills – on track with time, moves, and intervals – impressive!
  • Fast paced – no time to get bored!
  • Tons of different moves
  • Total body workout

Cons of the Burn 1000 Workout:

  • No modifications given
  • Instructions are given so quickly for each move, could be challenging for beginners to follow (although our instructor was great at walking around and correcting form when needed!)
  • Not a lot of rest time (though this could be a pro as it keeps your heart rate elevated!)

burn1000 plank bosuball

All in all, I really enjoyed Burn 1000 and will definitely be back!  It’s a tough workout, but doable.  I could feel it throughout my entire body the following days.  If you’re in St. Louis, check it out!

Have you ever done a group workout class that alternates the treadmill with floor work?

New Pure Barre Studio in St. Louis

There’s a new Pure Barre Studio in St. Louis that I can’t wait to check out!  It’s opening at the beginning of December and is located at 11684 Manchester Road in Des Peres, Missouri.

purebarre

My thoughts on barre workouts have totally changed.  I used to think they were boring, but now I enjoy the focus that’s required and the burn that is felt.  A bit about Pure Barre from their website:

We strive to make our studio a place where everyone will feel comfortable. Pure Barre is a low-impact workout and can be done by women of all shapes, sizes, and ages. As long as you can hold on to the ballet barre, you can do Pure Barre! No dancing experience is required. While the Pure Barre technique is high intensity, it is very low impact, meaning you’ll get a great workout without putting excessive stress on your joints. If running or jumping has ever caused pain or stress to your joints, Pure Barre may be just what you’re looking for. We focus on very tiny isometric movements, so size truly does not matter. Pure Barre is one of the fastest, most effective ways to change the shape of your body. Clients typically see the best results when they take 3-4 classes per week.

I’ve been following Pure Barre Des Peres on Facebook and they always post awesome motivational messages.

how hard you work

How hard you work determines how good you feel.  How true is that?  I know, personally, I always feel my best when I workout.  Working out is not easy; it’s hard.  The harder the workout the better I feel.

pure barre

The thigh toning, seat lifting, ab sculpting, body shaking, motivating, life changing workout. Who doesn’t want that?  I love the community aspect of group exercise classes, especially when the instructors have a lot of experience and know what they’re doing, just like the teachers at Pure Barre Des Peres are.

And guess what?  They are running an awesome special in celebration of their opening!  5 weeks unlimited for $100.  That’s an incredible deal and such a steal!  You better believe I’ll be there when the studio opens and I’ll be sure to update you.  St. Louis friends, I’d love to workout with you – let’s plan to go to a class together! Email me for details! 🙂
