Foodie PenPals: January

Whoever said penpals were just for elementary school?  Penpals are actually a lost idea.  Not anymore!  Lindsay from The Lean Green Bean brought them back and made it more fun than ever.  Details to follow.  Check out Lauren’s blog at I’m Just Here To Eat to see all the goodies I sent her!  For now, let me tell you about the package Halley sent me from Blunder Construction.

From the moment I found out that Halley would be sending me a package, I immediately began stalking reading her blog.  That is one of the many perks of Foodie PenPals; it introduces you to a variety of blogs.  Halley writes that she is “a civil engineer, food blogger, and creative spirit.”  I know someone of her intelligence and capabilities would be putting together a stellar package.  And I was right!  (I always am though… Just ask my dad.  I get it from him.)  Check out the goods:

Ooooh baby!  The Somersaults package are “dutch cocoa crunchy nuggets baked with sunflower seeds and toasted grains.”  I like that they use seeds instead of nuts.  It’s a nice change of pace and makes for a great snack.  I went on the Somersalt Snack Co. website and learned many facts about how nutritious sunflower seeds are.  They actually contain 50% more protein than almonds, two times more protein than walnuts and pecans, more fiber than an apple, and seven times the amount of folate as in almonds, pecans, and cashews.  Who knew?

Foster’s market favorite seven pepper jelly was definitely a hit in my house!  I made Jonny an eggwhite omelette and slathered this jelly all over the top.  One bite in and Jonny asked, “What did you put on here?  These are the best eggs you’ve ever made me.”  That says a lot!

The hot and sour wasabi mix was a delicious mix of nuts from Whole Foods.  I only buy plain nuts, so this is definitely not a product I would have picked up for myself.  (Perk #234 of Foodie PenPals!)  These, too, were delicious!  We love hot and spicy things and these nuts did not disappoint.  In fact, after I opened them it was not long that Jonny polished them off.  The spoon looks amazing and I cannot wait to stick it in a mug of hot chocolate or coffee and let the flavors seep in!  So fun and perfect for the cold temps in January!

2 samples of coffee?  Viennese and Dunkin’ Donuts!  Both fabuous choices.  Jonny and I love Dunkin’ Donuts coffee as we discovered it on a Florida trip a couple years ago.  St. Louis does not have many Dunkin’ Donuts, so this coffee was much appreciated!  Justin’s maple almond butter is always good and it’s much better that I consume it out of a package rather than a whole jar.  At once.  Fondue?  Holy yum!  I am thinking of making this a double-date night with our good friends enjoying the benefits of this package!

See how awesome Foodie PenPals is?  You should definitely get involved because, let’s be real, who doesn’t love having packages full of delicious food show up on their doorstep?  Here’s how you, and you and you and you, can get involved!

-On the 5th of every month, you will receive your penpal pairing via email. It will be your responsibility to contact your penpal and get their mailing address and any other information you might need like allergies or dietary restrictions.
-You will have until the 15th of the month to put your box of goodies in the mail. On the last day of the month, you will post about the goodies you received from your pen pal!
-The boxes are to be filled with fun foodie things, local food items or even homemade treats! The spending limit is $15. The box must also include something written. This can be anything from a note explaining what’s in the box, to a fun recipe… Use your imagination!
-You are responsible for figuring out the best way to ship your items depending on their size and how fragile they are. (Don’t forget about flat rate boxes!)
-Foodie Pen Pals is open to blog readers as well as bloggers. If you’re a reader and you get paired with a blogger, you are to write a short guest post for your pen pal to post on their blog about what you received. If two readers are paired together, neither needs to worry about writing a post for that month. *US Residents only please at this time- hopefully we can expand soon!*

Did you really think I’d let a whole post go by without referencing San Diego?

  1. :) So happy you enjoyed the box, especially the coffee samples! I had collected them from who-knows-where and since I never drink coffee, I decided to pack them into your goodie box. It’s fun shopping for foodie pen pals, because you never know what someone is going to love!

  2. Oh-my-coffee! What a smart girl to include coffee in the package, that would be a dream come true, I love trying new flavors and brands! Enjoy that fondue, it looks yummy.
